Karl Nollenberger, former MPA Program Academic Director, was quoted in an October 9 Duluth News Tribune about the Duluth government.

Former MPA Program Academic Director Karl Nollenberger, Academic Director of the MPA Program, along with UIC's Dennis Judd, has authored a chapter (entitled "Urban Politics and Government in the Midwest") in the new book The American Midwest: An Intrepretive Encyclopedia, published by Indiana University Press.

MPA Professor Scott Peters was one of five faculty and staff to be recognized by Dean McMorris at the 2006 Dean's Excellence Awards, and one of two faculty to receive an award for excellence in teaching. Peters "teaches an astounding load" because he wants to serve students, said Dean McMorris, and was instrumental in outreach to China for the highly successful Master of Public Administration (MPA) program for Chinese officials.

MPA Professor Michael Marcus and his business partner were awarded the 2006/2007 National Institute on Senior Centers Research Award. The award was presented at the NISC's annual meeting held in Chicago on March 7 to 10. It was given for the research that was done in Montgomery County, PA.

The MPA Department held a job search seminar on how to refine one's skills on job searches and the sources for jobs within the government and nonprofit sectors. The presenters were Karl Nollenberger, former Academic Director of the MPA Program, Harriet McCullough, Faculty in Nonprofit Management, and Michael Baker, Assistant City Manager in Downer's Grove, IL. The seminar covered resume writing, interview processes, and the sources for finding jobs in government and nonprofit sectors. The seminar was well-received and very successful.

Christina Drouet was recognized with the American Society of Public Administration Student of Year Award. It was presented at the University of Illinois - Chicago. Christina currently serves as the Manager of the Safety/Standards Branch within the Federal Aviation Administration regional airports division. She received her BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois - Chicago and is a MPA degree candidate. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout her time here. She is a registered Professional Engineer in Illinois, Virginia and Maryland. She is married with one child and lives in Park Ridge, IL. She is also an amateur violinist and avid gardener.

Patrick Burelle, city administrator, City of Aledo, IL was honored for service to the community by the Illinois City/County Management Association (ILCMA). Over a year ago, Patrick came to the community that had little history with codes or code compliance. As a long time code professional, he recognized that codes were essential for life safety and the protection of property and that code enforcement was an important contributor to quality of life. Patrick coordinated committee and town meetings, sought to educate and encouraged audience participation. Through his diligent efforts and hard work, the City of Aledo now has codes and policies that guide development and re-development and enhance the overall quality of life in the City of Aledo.

Two program members received public service recognition awards from the Chicago Chapter of the American Society of Public Administration - May 9, 2008

The Illinois Institute of Technology Graduate Program in Public Administration proudly announces that two members of the program – one recent graduate and one alumnus, who are also Chicago Police Department officers, received Public Service Recognition awards from the Chicago Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) on May 9, 2008.

Deputy Chief of Area Four Patrol Wayne Gulliford (Spring 05) was honored with the Alumni Model Administrator of the Year award (see picture below), for his ongoing work in specialized Homeland Security training to members of the Chicago Police Department and coordinating the efforts of four Police Districts on Chicago’s Westside, focusing on reducing violent crime in that area, while emphasizing community relations. Wayne also was recognized for his work as the commander of a unit of twenty Chicago Police SWAT Team members who were deployed to New Orleans in 2005 as part of the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System (ILEAS) contingent to assist in Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

Lieutenant Joseph Porebski (Spring 08) was awarded the Graduate Student of the Year award (see picture below). In addition to his GPA of 4.0 as a student in the MPA program, during his twenty-one (21) years on the Department, Joe has seen many assignments across the city, and has received numerous police department awards and commendations. On September 7, 2007, Joe and the 17th District Tactical Unit were honored by a Chicago City Council Resolution commending their actions on a search warrant which closed down a large marijuana growing operation. Joe is currently the Lieutenant in charge of the 17th District Community Policing Office.

MPA Program Held Semi-Annual Reception - April 17, 2008

The Spring 2008 MPA Reception was held on Thursday April 17, 2008. Well over 100 current and prospective students, alumni, faculty, and staff attended this semi-annual event. Dr. Mariana Gabarrot Arenas, Director and Professor of the Masters program in Public Administration and Policy at Mexico's Tecnologico de Monterrey (ITESM), discussed US-Mexican Migration in a Global Context.

The MPA Reception is held for the MPA Program community to celebrate the achievements of its students, alumni, and faculty, to learn about a topic of interest, and to socialize with other members of the MPA community.

MPA Program Hosts Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Webconference

On March 11, 2008 IIT's MPA Program hosted the Webconference Seminar titled "Fundraising in a Diverse World". The seminar is part of an ongoing Webconference Series provided by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).

David Brown, Principal and President of BrownPartners in Philadelphia, webcasted live from Philadelphia. He spoke on reaching diverse and multicultural audiences. This event brought AFP members together with current MPA students, staff, and alumni. Please watch for us to host future webconference seminars!

MPA Alumnus Peter O'Leary was recently appointed Fire Chief of the City of Fond du Lac in Wisconsin. The official swearing in ceremony took place on January 23, 2009.

The Illinois Institute of Technology Graduate Program in Public Administration proudly announces that two members of the program – one recent graduate and one alumnus, who are also Chicago Police Department officers, received Public Service Recognition awards from the Chicago Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) on May 9, 2008.

Amanda Kastern (Spring ‘06) was promoted to Director of the Student Service Center at Ross University ( Edison, NJ) this past spring from Associate Director of Financial Aid. She also was the recipient of DeVry University’s Legacy of Service Award.

Nancy Leona Magnus (Spring ‘90) retired from IDOT (Illinois Dept. of Transportation) after serving as a highway engineer and most recently as Bureau Chief of Local Roads and Streets for the past 28 years. She currently is enjoying working as a substitute teacher in Medinah, IL.

Richard Rice (Spring ‘98), who is a Client Program Manager for Shaw Environmental and Infrastructure, Inc. in Chicago, had recently worked the Recovery School District of New Orleans, LA to complete its first budget since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

MPA student Rich Chiapetta “was recently named Accenture’s skills-based volunteering business case pipeline lead, a role in which he is responsible for selecting nonprofit organizations needing pro-bono consulting services and matching them with volunteer employees at Accenture.”

Elias Voulgaris , Commander, Chicago Police Department: “I encourage members of the Chicago Police Dept to take a look at the MPA program. Very relevant to the duties and responsibilities of a police supervisor.”

Anton White , Police Officer, Chicago Police Department: “I am a power lifter. At the 181 lb weight division I am one of the top 50 lifters in the country with a bench press of 455 lbs.”

Ashley Lucas , Operations Coordinator – Housing, IIT, “Currently I am a member of the Kankakee Historical Preservation Commission for the County of Kankakee. We are working towards seeking a Certified Local Government Status for the County.”
